Cognex's new automated test, optimization and verification system for IN-SIGHT vision applications

(Shanghai, September 26, 2011) Cognex Corporation (Nasdaq: CGNX) introduces a new feature for In-Sight® vision systems that helps manufacturers easily implement vision systems Automatically test and verify that the system is functioning properly. Only the In-Sight® vision system has this new feature called TestRun, which allows users to verify their visual inspection results with greater confidence. Now, users can confirm the change by quickly checking the "baseline" structure. After the system is installed in the end-user factory, TestRun can also help system integrators and original equipment manufacturers to better demonstrate whether their vision systems meet acceptance criteria. Moreover, the machine operator can also check that the vision hardware is functioning properly to minimize undesirable results. In addition to testing system functionality, TestRun helps quality managers confirm "borderline" checks and optimize pass/fail criteria.

Whether the performance of the vision system is consistent depends on whether the image quality is consistent. Visual programs may contain a large number of setup parameters. TestRun assigns a range limit to these parameters, and when the program is executed, it can confirm whether the current set parameters are within the expected range.

In image inspection, TestRun references the database for application verification. The "Control" image library includes samples of "qualified" and "failed" components. The reference pattern of the failed component can be further graded according to the specific defects of the component. When TestRun is executed, the current vision program will evaluate each image in the image library. TestRun confirms whether the results of the current visual program are consistent with the "reference" results.

Whether the results of the visual program are consistent depends on whether the image acquisition quality is consistent. In hardware testing, the images captured by the vision system are measured for consistency by checking the focus, position, and illumination of the current system.

Bhaskar Banerjee, Manager of Cognex Vision Systems Business Unit, said: "For OEMs and system integrators, TestRun can ensure that the systems they produce or develop can still provide the required functionality after a change in the customer's environment." He said: "Now, machine operators can easily manage a large number of changes in the factory floor and maintain the reliability of the inspection system. TestRun records changes and performs verification or regular inspection after changes to help quality managers avoid A costly and lengthy verification process."

Users can set a test timing action using TestRun of In-Sight Browser 4.6, or later with the TestRun Setup Wizard - no special spreadsheet programming required. After setup, TestRun will perform timing actions through the In-Sight browser to verify the timing actions or to check for changes in the program. Detailed results can be viewed from the In-Sight Explorer Palette box.

The VisionViewTM operator interface is used to execute TestRun on the factory floor. TestRun will alert the operator if there is a situation that could adversely affect the operation of the vision system. Using the TestRun plug-in, the operator can perform test actions on all systems associated with VisionView without any custom human interface programming or setup. The inserter automatically detects if the camera has a TestRun configuration.

Banerjee said: "TestRun gives the vision system maximum confidence. Since the operator can easily check the vision system, it can avoid bad results as much as possible. If the operator modifies the program, TestRun will ensure that these modifications will not be any of the other. The program has an impact. After the new project is deployed, TestRun will provide log files with identifiable and documented test information that confirms system performance."
