A few days ago, a company in Wenzhou filed an inspection with Wenzhou Inspection and Quarantine Bureau for a batch of 890 boxes of glassware with a value of 26,100 US dollars. After sampling and testing by the Bureau, it was found that the cadmium content of the migrating heavy metal of the batch of goods exceeded China’s mandatory standards, and the hygiene index of the batch of goods was found to be unqualified. After an in-depth investigation, it was found that the main cause of unqualified was the failure of the safety and health indicators of the flower paper used in processing glass tableware.

The materials used for processing glass cutlery are food contact materials. Tableware produced from materials with unsatisfactory safety and health indicators is likely to cause harm to human health. Therefore, all countries have strict requirements on the food contact materials marketed. Cadmium is an off-white heavy metal element. The migration of cadmium in food contact materials enters the body through the respiratory and digestive tracts. Prolonged exposure to certain doses of cadmium can cause kidney damage. Chronic cadmium poisoning may present nervous system, immune system, and reproduction. Systemic damage, and high incidence of tumors.

In response to the existing problems, the inspection and quarantine department reminds relevant companies that the person-in-charge should strengthen the understanding of the importance of the quality and safety of food-contact materials; strengthen the acceptance of the quality of raw and auxiliary materials used to ensure the use of non-toxic, harmless, and non-polluting materials.
