How to remedy the yellowing of new leaves of Citron

The issue of yellowing leaves in Toona sinensis after transplanting can be effectively addressed through two main approaches. First, improving the soil's physical and chemical properties by incorporating more organic fertilizer. When transplanting seedlings, it is recommended to use well-decomposed manure or compost as a base fertilizer. Ensure that the root ball is carefully preserved during transplantation, and dig large planting holes to allow for better root development. Planting in loose, fertile soil with good drainage helps prevent and reduce the occurrence of iron deficiency, which often leads to yellow leaves. In addition, during the growing season, foliar sprays of ferrous sulfate solution can be applied. A typical mixture involves dissolving 100 to 150 grams of ferrous sulfate and 50 to 100 grams of citric acid in 50 liters of water. This solution should be sprayed on the upper parts of the leaves during sunny days, making sure to cover both the front and back of the foliage. This method has proven to be effective in addressing leaf yellowing quickly. Alternatively, a solution of ferrous sulfate can also be poured directly onto the roots. For this, mix 100 to 150 grams of ferrous sulfate and 50 to 100 grams of citric acid in 5 kilograms of water. Apply this solution by digging small holes around the roots and watering them in. Although this method may take longer to show results, its effects are long-lasting and beneficial over time. When applying ferrous sulfate, it’s best to combine it with a decomposed organic fertilizer solution. The organic matter in these fertilizers helps chelate iron, increasing its solubility and availability to the plant. Moreover, elements like calcium, magnesium, manganese, and copper can interfere with iron uptake, reducing its effectiveness. Therefore, it is advisable to apply fertilizers containing these elements alongside ferrous sulfate to maintain a balanced nutrient supply and optimize iron absorption.
