Quadruple Therapy for Pig Edema

Piglet edema disease is an enterotoxemia caused by a toxin produced by pathogenic E. coli. The disease mainly occurs in piglets that have good nutrition and fast growth before and after feeding and weaning. It is characterized by sudden onset, head, subcutaneous and subserous edema, dyskinesia, paroxysmal paralysis and paralysis. The necropsy revealed that the stomach wall, especially between the large curvature of the stomach and the mucous membrane and muscular layer of the cardia, showed a layer of transparent or pink jelly-like edema. This disease is a common and frequently occurring disease in small pig farmers. The incidence rate is 5% to 15%, and up to 30% in individual areas. The use of anti-allergy, dehydration, and antibacterial medications results in a low cure rate, especially after the piglets develop edema symptoms and are difficult to heal. During the years of clinical consultation, the author used the "fighting, diarrhea, desensitization, and antibacterial" quadruple therapy for the treatment of piglet edema disease to obtain a significant effect. The specific method is as follows:

1. Stop eating. When the confirmed piglets suffer from edema disease, the whole group of piglets will immediately stop eating, especially when they stop feeding commercial feed, and only provide clean drinking water to the piglets. The feeding should be continued for 2 to 3 days. If feeding, only a small amount can be fed. Chopped fresh green feed, usually between 100 and 150 grams per piglet, should not be fed too much. The purpose of food stoppage is to relieve the continuous stimulation of corn-soybean-type high-energy, high-protein diets on piglets' intestinal tract, reduce the rate of pathogenic E. coli propagation and toxin production in the intestine, intercept the source of bacterial toxin production, and restore the stomach. Intestinal function.

2. The diarrhea. Give the sick piglets magnesium sulfate or sodium sulfate 20g/head, or artificial salt 40g/head twice a day. The bacterial toxin produced by pathogenic E. coli in the intestine is expelled from the feces as soon as possible by means of diarrhea and the intestinal tract is cleaned to prevent reabsorption of bacterial toxins in the intestine. This is the key to the success of this disease treatment. In addition to the elimination of bacteriocins in the intestine, many critical cases can be cured without drugs.

3. Desensitization. Simultaneously with the diarrhea of ​​the affected piglets, intramuscular injection of dexamethasone sodium phosphate 0.5 mg/kg body weight twice a day desensitizes and reduces stress caused by feeding and management, reduces edema symptoms, and promotes recovery.

4. Antibacterial. The use of antimicrobial agents inhibits or kills pathogenic E. coli in the intestine, controls bacterial reproduction and prevents the production of bacterial toxins. For simple edema, one day later, the affected piglet was intramuscularly injected with 0.1 ml/kg body weight of oxytetracycline hydrochloride; the same piglet was given 40 mg/kg body weight of oxytetracycline, twice daily. Take 3 days. If there is secondary or mixed infection, other broad-spectrum antibiotics or sulfonamides may be used in combination.

Due to the sudden occurrence of swine edema disease and the rapid development of the disease, conventional anti-allergy, dehydration and antibacterial treatment methods have lower cure rates. The quadrilateral therapy of “dwelling, diarrhea, desensitization, and antibacterial” that we sought during clinical consultation was effective. Not only should the use be quick and early, but it should also be handled simultaneously with the same group of piglets, and must not be limited to the “fire suppression” treatment of single diseased pigs, and ignore the simultaneous treatment of the same group of piglets. Otherwise, it may be that sick piglets are cured and there are new cases in the same group of piglets.
