Contrast analysis of 85 cases of thyroid nodules with contrast-enhanced ultrasound and pathological results

Release date: 2015-08-14

Recently, researchers from the People's Hospital of Shaanxi Province published a paper to explore the specificity and sensitivity of contrast-enhanced ultrasound in the differential diagnosis of benign and malignant thyroid nodules, and to provide a basis for the diagnosis of thyroid nodules. The study pointed out that contrast-enhanced ultrasound has good sensitivity and specificity for the diagnosis of benign and malignant nodules, and is valuable for the diagnosis and differential diagnosis of thyroid nodules. The article was published in the 2015 issue of Shaanxi Medical Journal.

Eighty-five patients (123 nodules) who underwent conventional ultrasonography and qualitatively difficult thyroid nodules were examined by thyroid contrast-enhanced ultrasonography and histopathological examination was performed to compare the sensitivity and specificity of contrast-enhanced ultrasonography. The value of different angiographic patterns, single or multiple nodules in the diagnosis of malignant nodules; and the value of contrast-enhanced ultrasound in the diagnosis of nodules of different sizes.

Compared with histopathology, the specificity of contrast-enhanced ultrasound diagnosis was 91.8%, sensitivity was 86.0%, accuracy was 90.2%, positive predictive value was 86.0%, and negative predictive value was 91.8%. Low-enhancement and single-shot nodules are helpful in the diagnosis of thyroid cancer. Ring enhancement is helpful in the diagnosis of benign lesions; angiography is low-enhanced and nodules less than 1 cm are more likely to be malignant.
