Korean pig cartilage cells made of biological materials

Release date: 2008-12-03

In 2008, a groundbreaking development in regenerative medicine emerged from South Korea, where a research team successfully applied biomaterials derived from porcine chondrocytes to aid in cartilage tissue repair. This innovative approach was led by the Cell Therapy Center at the Korea Medical School of Asian University, which achieved a global first in this field. The researchers cultivated porcine chondrocytes in vitro and extracted bioactive components from cartilage tissue, developing a novel biomaterial designed for the regeneration of human tissues, particularly articular cartilage. They also established a new method for transplanting this material into patients.

The newly developed biomaterial is a combination of fibrin and hyaluronic acid, which exhibits a strong affinity for chondrocytes and significantly enhances the effectiveness of bone marrow stimulation. Researchers observed that chondrocytes within the mixture formed high-quality cartilage tissue. Moreover, when bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells were introduced, they could be effectively differentiated into cartilage without the need for additional transforming growth factor (TGF-β). To improve the mechanical strength of the material, the team coated it with an alginate layer, making it suitable for clinical use.

The material was named "Art," and it can be molded into various forms such as granules or flakes for different medical applications. Prior to this breakthrough, the treatment of cartilage damage had been limited by the availability of effective and biocompatible materials. This innovation not only offers a promising solution but also opens new possibilities for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.
