Lung cancer has become the most dangerous cancer
November is recognized as "International Lung Cancer Awareness Month." On the 4th, during a press conference organized by the Ministry of Health's Disease Prevention and Control Bureau, the China Anti-Cancer Association, and Shanghai Roche Pharmaceuticals, the event titled "Dialogue Hope – Focus on China's Lung Cancer Treatment" took place. Professor Zhi Xiuyi, a senior official from the China Anti-Cancer Association, highlighted that China remains the country with the highest lung cancer burden globally, with approximately 600,000 deaths reported annually. Lung cancer has now become the most deadly form of cancer in the nation.
Professor Zhi emphasized the importance of early detection and timely treatment for lung cancer patients. However, due to the often subtle or absent early symptoms, many individuals are diagnosed at an advanced stage, when the cancer has already spread. As a result, they may lose the option of surgery and face limited treatment choices, often leading to a poor prognosis. Shi Yuankai, deputy dean of the Cancer Hospital of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and head of the Department of Oncology, pointed out that with medical advancements and the development of innovative targeted therapies, advanced lung cancer could soon be managed as a chronic condition. Patients could then live longer, much like those with diabetes, under medical supervision and through the proper use of medication.
