Sanyuan County is one of the key vegetable production bases in Shaanxi Province, where over 100,000 mu of vegetables are cultivated annually. To enhance vegetable quality and reduce the harmful effects of excessive pesticide and chemical fertilizer use on both human health and soil fertility, the county began promoting pollution-free farming methods. In late June 2001, an experimental project using Effective Microorganisms (EM) was initiated across several vegetable and flower farms in the area. The test involved various crops, including green vegetables, spinach, mung beans, melons, squash, cucumbers, and grape seedlings. The EM solution was applied in different ways: soaking seeds, treating the soil as a base fertilizer, root irrigation, and foliar sprays at regular intervals. For instance, green vegetables and spinach were soaked in EM before sowing, while mung beans were treated after developing four true leaves. Melons and squash were given EM treatment when they reached about one foot in length, and cucumbers were treated during frost outbreaks. Grape seedlings received EM treatment after transplanting. Meanwhile, the control group was watered with clear water under the same conditions. The experiment ran from June 28 to July 18, 2001. The results showed significant improvements in the EM-treated groups compared to the control. Chinese cabbage emerged two days earlier, showing better growth. Spinach sprouted three days sooner with no dead seedlings, unlike the control group, which had severe losses. In the case of eggplants, the EM group had 43 junction angles compared to 28 in the control, a 34.8% increase. For melons, the average length was 4.09 meters in the EM group versus 2.8 meters in the control, a 31.9% improvement. Mung bean roots in the EM group were longer, with a 33% increase in root length and a 43.5% increase in leaf area. Cucumbers showed a 33.8% increase in new vine length and a 27% increase in leaf area. Grape clusters increased by 46%, and the leaf area of Longsang plants was 51% larger in the EM group. Additionally, chicken manure fermented with EM lost its odor completely within seven days, producing beneficial microorganisms. Although the trial period was short and not all conditions were fully tested, the results were promising and aligned with national findings. As the 21st century became the era of biotechnology, it became clear that promoting eco-friendly agriculture could improve soil health, boost product competitiveness, and enhance people’s quality of life. Further research and broader application of EM technology are essential for sustainable agricultural development. Http://Kangyuan Oasis Biotechnology (Beijing) Co., Ltd.
