To enhance the quality of produce and reduce the negative impacts of excessive pesticide and chemical fertilizer use on both human health and soil fertility, the county initiated a program promoting pollution-free vegetables. In late June 2001, an experimental project using Effective Microorganisms (EM) was launched across several vegetable and flower farms in the region.
The test involved various crops. Green vegetables and spinach were soaked in EM solutions, while the soil was treated with EM as a base fertilizer before sowing. No pods were sprayed directly, but EM dilution was used for root application at regular intervals. After 10 days, leaves were sprayed again. Mung beans were treated when they had four true leaves, and melons and squashes were given EM treatment once they reached about one foot in length. Cucumbers received EM treatment during frost outbreaks, and grape seedlings were treated after transplanting. During irrigation and foliar sprays, the control group was treated with clear water, with all other conditions kept identical.
The experiment ran from June 28, 2001, to July 18, 2001. The results showed significant improvements in the EM-treated groups. Chinese cabbage emerged two days earlier than the control group and grew more vigorously. Spinach emerged three days earlier with no dead seedlings, while the control group suffered from severe seedling death. On July 11, the EM group had 43 junction angles compared to 28 in the control group, a 34.8% increase. By July 18, melons in the EM group had an average cranial length of 4.09 meters, compared to 2.8 meters in the control group, showing a 31.9% improvement.
Mung bean roots in the EM group measured 6.19 cm on average, compared to 4.15 cm in the control group, a 33% increase. Leaf area also improved by 43.5%. Cucumbers in the EM group had new vines measuring 35 cm with 8 new leaves, compared to 26 cm and 6 leaves in the control group, representing a 33.8% growth increase in vine length and a 27% rise in leaf area. Grape clusters in the EM group numbered 39, versus 21 in the control group, a 46% increase. Longsang plants showed a 51% increase in average leaf area, reaching 283 cm², with healthier, brighter green leaves.
Additionally, chicken manure fermented with EM lost its offensive odor within three days and was completely odor-free after seven days, with full hyphae development observed.
Although the trial period was short and not fully comprehensive, the results were highly promising. The effects of EM were clearly visible and aligned with similar trials nationwide. As we move into the 21st century, bioengineering will play a crucial role in sustainable agriculture. Promoting pollution-free farming can improve public health, restore soil quality, and boost product competitiveness. Further large-scale application and refinement of this technique are strongly recommended. This experiment was conducted by Kangyuan Oasis Biotechnology (Beijing) Co., Ltd.
