The procedure involves carefully trimming their feathers in specific areas. After the summer season begins, the hens' wings, chest, abdomen, back, and neck are clipped, leaving only the long feathers on their tails and wings. This helps them fan themselves more effectively and keeps away flies and mosquitoes. The cutting should be done with care to avoid damaging the skin or major blood vessels. It's important to keep the hair short enough to allow for better airflow but not so short that it causes discomfort. In early summer, the cuts are lighter, while during the hotter months, more extensive trimming is performed. Before cutting, a flashlight is used to examine the corns (the hard parts of the feet) to ensure the hen is healthy and ready for the procedure. Once the hen is identified, it should be caught quickly to minimize stress and prevent it from squawking or flapping its wings. The cutting must be done swiftly and precisely. Afterward, the hen is held gently until it calms down, then released. This method helps reduce the risk of injury and ensures a smoother recovery. Since chickens don’t have sweat glands, their thick feathers act as insulation in cold weather but can make it difficult for them to cool down in the summer. By shearing them, their ability to regulate body temperature improves, which in turn supports better egg production. Proper shearing not only enhances their comfort but also contributes to their overall health and productivity during the hot months.
