5 simple tips for raising smarter kids

I’m definitely not an expert, and I don’t consider myself a supermom—though maybe every mom could be considered a supermom because we all take on this incredible role of nurturing and guiding life in ways that are both challenging and deeply rewarding. It’s amazing how we manage to do it all despite the lack of sleep! But that’s what makes us superheroes, right?

Anyway, this post isn’t meant to dive into the complexities of motherhood. Instead, I wanted to focus on those little brains of ours, the ones that soak up knowledge like sponges. Along the way, we’ve picked up some tricks to maximize those teachable moments when our kids are eager to learn. Knowledge leads to wisdom, and wisdom is truly empowering. So, let’s give our kids a head start with these five simple strategies we’ve adopted to help raise smarter kids.

1// Word of the Week

Sometimes, new words pop up in conversations, and the kids ask what they mean. Other times, we intentionally introduce a fun word to expand their vocabulary. For instance, during one of our talks, the kids got distracted trying to figure out what "procrastinate" meant. That sparked the idea of our “Word of the Week,” where we write a longer word on our chalkboard and explain its meaning. Aliyah practices writing and spelling the word, both verbally and on paper. Both kids learn to recognize the word and even use it in sentences. It’s a great reminder for all of us about the richness of language and how there’s always more to discover.

2// There’s an App for That

When I first became a mom, I swore I’d avoid using gadgets to keep my kids entertained. But with three kids, reality hit hard. Now, we set strict boundaries and time limits, but when we travel, our iPhones and iPads are lifesavers. We’ve filled them with educational apps that turn screen time into learning opportunities. Some of our favorites include:

  • Hooked on Phonics: Free to download, but lessons cost extra. We snagged the classroom version during a free day and love it!
  • Endless Alphabet: Great for teaching letters and sounds. The kids can’t get enough of it!
  • Giraffe’s Matching Zoo: A free matching game that’s surprisingly engaging.
  • CVC Phonics Spelling Practice: Another app we got during a free day. It helps with spelling and sound recognition.
  • Motion Math Wings: Fun for introducing math concepts, especially multiplication. It’s like Angry Birds, but educational!
  • My Coloring Book: Not strictly educational, but coloring improves early color theory skills.
  • Shapes: A fun way to learn about shapes.

3// Turn Dinner Time into Learning Time

In an ideal world, we’d all cook together, with the kids helping out and learning to measure, chop, and identify ingredients. Occasionally, we manage to pull this off, but more often, I involve them in small tasks during dinner prep. These tasks give them a sense of accomplishment. We also cherish our family dinners. Though they don’t happen every night, when they do, we make the most of them. We play games that encourage communication, vocabulary building, and laughter. Sometimes we spell out words, play rhyming games, or solve math problems. Recently, we’ve been enjoying the Family Dinner Box of Questions, which sparks great conversations and memories.

4// Cultivate Creativity

We aim to foster solution-oriented thinking in our home. Whenever something goes wrong—a spill, a broken item—we encourage the kids to think about solutions rather than dwell on the problem. At first, it was tough, especially for young kids who tend to get upset over spills. But gradually, they’ve learned to say things like, “Don’t worry, we can clean it!” or “I have a plan!” This shift has been eye-opening. By redirecting their focus toward solutions, we’re nurturing their creativity and critical thinking. It’s inspiring to see their minds at work!

5// Use Bing for Learning

There are countless moments when curiosity strikes—whether it’s identifying an animal or understanding a word. Back in my childhood, I’d rush to the dictionary or encyclopedia. Now, a quick online search answers everything. I started using Bing because of its reward system, which adds up with each search. If we’re going to look things up anyway, why not earn something? Plus, the image search feature is a hit with the kids—they love scrolling through endless photos of their favorite animals. Bing also launched a new initiative called Bing in the Classroom, offering ad-free, safe searches tailored for schools. They filter adult content and enhance privacy, making it ideal for educational purposes. Another perk? You can donate your Bing Rewards points to schools to get Surface tablets.
