Causes of phytotoxicity caused by herbicides
In recent weeks, agricultural experts conducted on-site investigations into the three major crops—soybeans, corn, and rice—in Dehui City, Jilin Province. During their study, they discovered that certain fields had been affected by herbicides. In response, Wang Guangxiang, an expert in chemical weed control from the Jilin Academy of Agricultural Sciences, explained that the primary causes of herbicide damage include late application, excessive dosage, and spray drift. He noted that herbicide droplets can drift onto neighboring crops or evaporate into the air, especially during rainfall, leading to phytotoxic effects. Additionally, residues left in the soil can also negatively impact future plantings.
Wang emphasized the importance of using herbicides responsibly and taking into account their long-term effects on crop rotation. He pointed out that herbicide toxicity often occurs when rain splashes contaminated surface soil onto crops, or when irrigation water becomes polluted. Other contributing factors include residual herbicides in the soil, improper use of quinclorac in paddy fields, inherent side effects of the chemicals, environmental conditions, incorrect application methods and dosages, misuse or misunderstanding of instructions, product quality issues, and varying levels of resistance among different crop varieties.
To prevent such problems, he recommended that farmers receive proper training, follow guidelines strictly, and consult with agricultural specialists before applying any herbicides. This approach not only protects current crops but also ensures the sustainability of future farming practices.
