According to a report from Applied Physics News, researchers at the University of North Carolina have developed a new type of X-ray using carbon fiber, which allows for quicker and more effective CT imaging with reduced peak power consumption compared to traditional methods. Current CT scanners are often slow and not as effective, especially when it comes to capturing high-resolution images quickly. Carbon nanotubes, which are just one atom thick and have a diameter as small as one nanometer, offer a promising alternative. These nanotubes can emit electrons without needing to be heated, making them ideal for use in advanced imaging systems. Traditional CT scans rely on mechanical rotation—either moving the X-ray source or rotating the object being scanned—to capture images from around 1,000 different angles. In 2005, researchers introduced a multi-X-ray source scanner that eliminated the need for mechanical movement by rapidly switching between multiple X-ray sources. Each source captured a different angle of the image during this quick switching process. The latest advancement combines this multi-X-ray source approach with multi-channel technology, allowing all X-ray sources to operate simultaneously and capture images from multiple angles at once. This significantly improves speed and efficiency. In their experiment, the team used a prototype of their new scanner to image an electronic circuit board and compared the results with those from conventional X-ray systems. The images were sharp and clear, with only minor differences, but the new system was much faster. Looking ahead, the research team aims to develop a compact CT scanner capable of scanning small animals, which could open up new possibilities in medical research and diagnostics.
