Causes of phytotoxicity caused by herbicides

In recent weeks, agricultural experts conducted on-site investigations in Dehui City, Jilin Province, focusing on the three major crops—soybeans, corn, and rice. During their fieldwork, they discovered that certain plots had been affected by herbicides. According to Wang Guangxiang, a specialist in chemical weed control at the Jilin Academy of Agricultural Sciences, the primary causes of herbicide damage include late application, excessive use, and spray drift. Herbicide droplets can drift onto neighboring crops or evaporate into the air, especially during rainfall, leading to phytotoxic effects. Additionally, residues left in the soil and the direct impact of foliar applications contribute to the issue. Wang emphasized the importance of using herbicides responsibly and taking into account their long-term effects on crop rotation and environmental safety. He warned that improper usage not only harms current crops but may also affect future planting cycles. He further explained that phytotoxicity can occur due to various factors, such as rainwater splashing contaminated soil onto crops, irrigation water pollution, and residual chemicals in the ground. The misuse of quinclorac in paddy fields, along with inherent side effects of herbicides, plays a significant role. Environmental conditions, incorrect application methods, and inaccurate dosages all contribute to the problem. Misleading information, misuse of products, and variations in resistance among different crop varieties also increase the risk of herbicide-related damage. To prevent such issues, farmers are urged to follow guidelines strictly, consult with agricultural experts, and choose high-quality products. By adopting a more scientific and cautious approach, the negative impacts of herbicides can be minimized, ensuring both crop health and sustainable farming practices.
