A new type of rapid lateral flow analysis that detects all types of Legionella simultaneously. The most common dominant strain, Legionella pneumoniae, can be identified using the same test method alone.
This new assay is called DuopathLegionella and is supplied by MerckKGaA (Darmstadt, Germany). Suspected colonies amplified from water or environment sampled in Coal Yeast Extract (BCYE) agarose medium or BYCE medium supplemented with Legionella selective components were verified using this method.
This test method is extremely sensitive and reduces the risk of false negatives. In a study compared to the widely used latex aggregation assay, the DuopathLegionella assay was 100% sensitive to Legionella pneumoniae and 92% to Legionella, while the latex assay was only 98% and 37%.
