Sub-phase management of rabbits>
Newborn rabbits are not fully developed, with underdeveloped organs and weak physiological regulation, making them highly vulnerable to death. As a result, breeders must implement careful, stage-specific management to improve survival rates. One of the first important steps is ensuring that the young rabbits consume enough milk. During the early sleep period—when their eyes are still closed, typically around 12 days—their growth is rapid, and they should be encouraged to nurse as soon as possible. The colostrum produced by the mother rabbit in the first 1–2 days after birth is especially rich in nutrients and has a mild laxative effect, which helps the babies pass meconium and supports healthy development. It’s crucial that all newborns receive this vital first milk.
A key focus during this time is fostering. In practice, some does may give birth to more kits than they can nurse, while others have fewer. A healthy lactating doe can usually feed 6–8 kits, so any extra should be placed with another doe as soon as possible. Kits with similar birth dates should be grouped based on size and strength to ensure even feeding and care.
In cases where a doe refuses to nurse—especially if she is a first-time mother or unwell—forced nursing may be necessary. This involves securing the doe in her nest box and placing the kits near her nipples, allowing them to suckle freely. This process should be repeated 1–2 times daily for 3–5 days, and most does will eventually begin to nurse naturally.
If the mother is unable to nurse due to death, lack of milk, or illness, manual feeding becomes essential. Milk from other animals such as goats, or substitutes like condensed milk, can be used. These alternatives should be warm and prepared hygienically to avoid infections.
Maintaining a stable environment is also critical. The temperature in the rabbit’s incubation area should be kept between 15°C and 20°C to prevent cold stress. Additionally, it’s important to protect the nests from predators, so cages and nest boxes must be securely closed to keep rats and other pests out.
As the rabbits open their eyes, typically around day 10–14, they enter the weaning phase. At this point, their milk intake begins to decrease, and they need solid food to meet their growing nutritional needs. By day 15, they often start exploring their surroundings and may begin nibbling on small amounts of soft, nutritious food like soy milk, bean curd, or finely chopped grass and leaves. By day 20, you can introduce small quantities of grains, bran, cornmeal, and supplements such as charcoal powder, vitamins, and minerals to support their health.
Feeding practices should be adjusted accordingly. Initially, feed the rabbits 5–6 times a day in small portions. As they grow, gradually reduce the frequency while increasing the amount. After 30 days, transition them to a more regular feeding schedule in preparation for weaning.
It's also advisable to separate the kits into individual cages after feeding to reduce competition and ensure each rabbit gets enough nutrition. During this time, avoid overfeeding high-moisture green feeds, as this can lead to digestive issues like diarrhea or bloating. Monitoring their behavior and adjusting the diet accordingly is essential for their long-term health and survival.
