Diagnosis and treatment of yellow piglets

Diagnosis and treatment of yellow piglets

Piglet jaundice, also known as early-onset E. coli disease, is an acute, highly lethal infectious disease of newborn piglets. The disease is caused by enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli piglet jaundice, is a common disease in suckling piglets, has a high incidence and mortality, seriously hampering the development of the pig industry, if the piglets do not control in time after the onset, it will The death of the entire nest can cause serious economic losses. A typical case is described below.

1 Incidence

There are 15 pigs raised by Zhang in Hucun Town, Ji County, Hebei Province, including 3 sows, all of which were born in September-October 2006. The first sow was born on September 22, 2006. Of the 13 piglets, two piglets began to develop on the second day and died. On the third day, the whole litter of piglets had onset, 3 died, 5 died on the fourth day, and all died on the fifth day. After 12 days, the second sow gave birth to 15 piglets. On the second day, 3 piglets were sick and died. Then they went to Xingtai City Veterinary Hospital for treatment. Only 2 piglets with severe symptoms died after diagnosis and treatment. All other piglets recovered to health. After 9 days, the third sow gave birth to 13 piglets that were prevented by drugs in advance. This disease did not occur in the litter and the piglets grew up healthy.

2 clinical symptoms

Symptoms occur about 24 hours after the birth of a piglet. One to three litters of piglets are suddenly found to have the onset of piglets. The piglets are mentally depressed, systemic debilitating, and quickly die, followed by other piglets. The main symptoms: row of yellow dilute feces or watery stools, yellow or yellow-white, mixed with curd-like small pieces and small bubbles, with stench odor, anal incontinence, sick pigs are depressed, stop feeding, dehydration, rapid weight loss, due to dehydration With the loss of electrolytes, the pigs' eyes collapsed, and the skin under the abdomen appeared purplish red and died of coma.

3 pathological changes

A total of 3 morbid piglets were necropsied. The sick pigs had rough hairs, subcutaneous edema in the neck, a lot of yellow curd blocks in the stomach, bleeding points in the pyloric glands, shedding of small intestine mucosa, and bleeding and bleeding spots. Duodenal lesions are the most serious. The small intestine contents mixed with curd cubes were mostly yellow-green aromas and had a strong stench of stench; the jejunum, ileum, and colon were filled with a lot of watery exudates, mixed with yellow-sized particles, and mesenteric lymph nodes. Mild swelling was light red. Cardiac dilation, pulmonary edema, and needle-point bleeding on the kidney surface.

4 Laboratory inspection

4.1 Liver, spleen, and mesenteric lymph node smear microscopy examinations were performed on diseased-natal piglets. There were a small number of Gram-negative bacilli that were scattered, non-deciduous, and non-spore.

4.2 Bacterial culture: aseptically collected liver, spleen and mesenteric lymph nodes of diseased piglets were inoculated on blood agar and MacConkey agar medium and cultured at 37 °C for 24 hours. Colonies on blood agar plates grew round. , neat edges, slightly uplifted, smooth, grayish, non-hemolytic medium-sized colonies. Red colonies were grown on the MacConkey culture medium. A single colony was stained for microscopic examination. The morphology of the colonies was the same as that of the bacteria in the material smear.

4.3 Biochemical tests: The isolates can ferment glucose, lactose, maltose, and mannitol to produce acid production gas; can produce strontium base, do not produce hydrogen sulfide, do not decompose urea, MR test is positive, and VP test is negative.

4.4 Drug susceptibility test: The paper method was used, and the results were high sensitivity to nitrofluoride, cyproterone and oxytetracycline, and insensitive to penicillin, ampicillin, cephalosporin, and gentamicin.

5 Prevention

5.1 Strengthen the feeding and management, thoroughly remove the excrement and disinfect the pens with Green Vespa disinfectant, 2 times a day, keep the pens dry, warm, sanitary, fresh air, and pay attention to the insulation of piglets. It is best that the sows are intramuscularly injected with the yellow peony fungus one month and two weeks before delivery.

5.2 Treatment: All piglets are injected with special effects (main component is cyproterone, etc.), 0.2 ml per kilogram of body weight; Oral special effects enteritis (the main component is norfloxacin), oral 1 to 2 ml per piglet, daily 2 times for 3 days. Seriously ill pigs with some heat-clearing, detoxifying, anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, dampness and phlegm-reducing herbs are more effective. Formula: Pulsatilla 2 grams, Coptis 1 g, Phellodendron 2 g, Qinpi 1 g, paeonol 1 g, water 2 times orally, for 3 days. At the same time to the sow oral Chinese herbs, prescriptions: Pulsatilla 20 grams, Coptis 10 grams, Treats 20 grams, 20 grams of astragalus, honeysuckle 20 grams, 20 grams of wolfberry, ebony 20 grams, 10 grams of Divine Comedy, Hawthorn 10 grams, 5 grams of licorice, Grind the sows 2 times, once in the morning and once in the evening, and use them for 3 days.
By adopting the above comprehensive treatment measures, only 2 piglets with severe symptoms died in the second litter of piglets, and all other piglets recovered. After the third sow was born, early prevention with antibiotics did not occur.

6 Summary

6.1 Diagnosed piglet jaundice based on prevalence, clinical symptoms, pathological changes, and laboratory tests combined with a comprehensive diagnosis.

6.2 It was learned that sows on this farm had never been vaccinated before their litters. Therefore, the sows should be sanitized and sterilized before farrowing. Oral antibiotics should be given to the sows before they are sucked after giving birth. Injecting antibacterial drugs or taking some of the traditional Chinese medicines of detoxification, anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, and dampness-suppressing phlegm can be used to prevent the disease through the use of milk in piglets. Therefore, piglets born in the third sow did not develop jaundice in piglets.

6.3 Piglets should be diagnosed and treated early after the onset of this disease. If there is a piglet disease in a litter of piglets, we must pay close attention to the treatment of whole litter piglets, otherwise it will cause the entire litter of piglets to die. In the treatment of the disease, if no conditions for drug susceptibility testing are performed, no application of any one of the antimicrobial drugs can be applied for a long time. Therefore, they should be used alternately to improve the therapeutic effect. In the application of drug treatment should be injected and oral administration and use, while with detoxification, anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, dampness and Zhiji Chinese medicine better.

6.4 Yellow piglets generally have a higher incidence in autumn and winter. Due to the change of climate and dampness in the season, the appetite of sow piglets is affected, and the body's resistance to disease is reduced. Therefore, the sows are born at this season. We must strengthen feeding and management, do a good job in sanitation and disinfection, make piglets grow in a comfortable environment, and it is very important to apply antibiotics to piglets as soon as possible.
