Grape autumn management is the key

Grape autumn management is the key

After the harvest, grapevines typically experience a decline in vitality. From fruit picking through autumn and winter, proper management becomes crucial to ensure better yields and higher quality grapes for the following year. As Song Wei, a technician from the Shaanxi Huxian Grape Association, explains, "Autumn vineyard management is a critical period that directly affects the success of the next growing season." Grape care during the fall is essential for maintaining plant health and preparing for the next cycle. Neglecting this stage can lead to issues such as excessive foliage, severe diseases, poor flower bud development, early leaf drop, and weak shoot growth. To avoid these problems, several key practices should be followed: **Tree Management**: After harvesting, it's important to remove damaged or rotten fruits and clear the orchard of debris. During the late growth phase, controlling vegetative growth and promoting flower bud differentiation are vital for next year’s production. This involves pruning techniques like tip pinching, removing dense or unproductive branches, and thinning out old leaves. These actions improve air circulation and light penetration, helping the vines develop stronger, more uniform growth. **Autumn Basal Fertilization**: Following the harvest, the root system enters a new growth phase, making it an ideal time for fertilization. Applying well-decomposed organic fertilizer combined with superphosphate helps replenish the tree’s nutrient reserves, supporting healthy budding, flowering, and shoot growth in the coming year. The fertilizer should be applied using methods like strip, ring, or radial trenching, with 25–50 kg per plant. Watering after application ensures the nutrients are properly absorbed and gives the plants time to recover before winter. **Soil Cultivation**: After applying basal fertilizer, deep plowing should be done around the base of the plants. This improves soil aeration and encourages the development of new roots, enhancing the overall health of the vine. **Disease Prevention**: Fall is a high-risk period for fungal diseases like downy mildew, especially after heavy rains. Spraying fungicides such as metalaxyl, mancozeb, or other approved products can help prevent outbreaks and protect the vines. **Timely Harvesting**: Picking mature grapes on time prevents over-ripening, which can affect quality and reduce the tree’s nutrient reserves. Early harvest also supports better spring growth, flower set, and vigorous shoot and leaf development for the next season. By focusing on these key areas, growers can ensure their grapevines remain healthy and productive, setting the stage for a successful growing season ahead.
