Recently, the Yantai District Family Planning Service Center successfully completed a groundbreaking research project titled "Intrauterine IUD Measurement and Evaluation." The innovative method for measuring intrauterine devices (IUDs) has been granted a utility model patent by the State Intellectual Property Office and is now being promoted for clinical application. This development marks a significant step forward in improving the accuracy and efficiency of IUD monitoring and placement.

It's estimated that over 100 million women in China use IUDs for contraception, with this method accounting for approximately 70% of global IUD usage. Currently, B-ultrasound is the primary imaging technique used to evaluate IUDs, but it often requires complementary X-ray examinations—especially in complex or difficult cases. However, traditional X-ray methods are limited in the amount of information they provide, making them less effective when used alongside ultrasound.

Researchers from the Yantai District Family Planning Service Center, including Qin Yu, Wang Ping, and Zhang Xuemin, conducted extensive studies by sampling various pelvic anatomies based on factors such as height, weight, and age. They analyzed the normal uterine movement and incorporated a clock-like dial system to develop a new measurement approach. Through this process, they collected data from 119 different pelvis shapes and calculated an average square area. Based on the clock dial concept, they designed a "concentric angle type" measuring ruler, which was tested on 2,190 cases. The results showed a 97.48% match with B-ultrasound findings, proving its high level of accuracy.

According to reports, the introduction of this "concentric angle type" measuring ruler has introduced four key innovations in IUD monitoring. It addresses the limitations of traditional X-ray techniques, offering more detailed information and enhancing the complementarity with B-ultrasound. This advancement is particularly beneficial for diagnosing complications such as IUD displacement or rupture, making the process more reliable and efficient. The Shanghai Medical Device Industry Association has recognized the importance of this innovation in improving reproductive healthcare outcomes. This breakthrough not only enhances diagnostic accuracy but also supports better patient care and long-term contraceptive management.
