How to wean the lamb early

In order to restore the body condition of the ewes and to develop the ability of the lambs to live independently, when the lambs grow to a certain degree, they must be weaned. The weaning time should be comprehensively considered based on the lamb's age, weight, feeding conditions, and production needs. The traditional lamb weaning time in our country is 4 months old. Most weaning methods use one-time disconnection, after which the mother does not meet each other. At the time of weaning, only the ewes are usually removed, and the lambs are kept in the original sheep house to keep the lamb as much as possible. After the lamb is weaned, the sheds and grazing sites of the ewe and lamb should be appropriately enlarged to prevent mutual calls and affect rest and feeding. After a period of 4 days to 5 days, the lamb can eat grass safely. Lambs after weaning should be immediately grouped according to species, sex and development status and transferred to bred sheep. After weaning, artificial milking should be performed on a few ewes with excessive milk secretion to prevent mastitis.

The early weaning technique of the Lamb was a major reform in the late 1960s. The introduction of early weaning can significantly improve the nutritional status of the ewes, which will not only benefit the development of the lamb, but also increase the fertility of the ewes.

There are two types of early weaning: first, weaning one week after birth; second, weaning 40 days after birth. Early weaning must ensure that newborn lambs are colostrum for 2 days or less, otherwise it will not be easy to survive. Because colostrum contains immune body, antitoxin, and nutrient-rich, with any feed

Irreplaceable role.

One week after the lamb was weaned, the lamb was artificially bred with a milk replacer. The method is to add 4 times dilution of milk replacer, feed 4 times a day for 3 weeks, or until the lamb live weight up to 5 kg weaned; after weaning, feed pelleted feed containing 8% of protein, hay or grass food is not limited. Milk replacer should be formulated according to the ingredients of sheep milk. The current universal one-week formula for dairy products is: fat 30% -32%, milk protein 22% -24%, lactose 22% -25%, cellulose 1%, minerals 5% -10%, vitamins and antibiotics 5 %.

Lambs are weaned one week after they are born, except for the artificial breeding of lambs with milk substitutes. They must have good housing conditions, require high conditions, and have a high mortality rate for lambs. This method is currently difficult to popularize and apply in China.

Lambs are weaned 40 days after birth and can be fed with fodder and grazing. This method is worth learning for our country, for two reasons: First, from the ewes lactation law, postpartum reached the peak of lactation at 3 weeks, and dropped sharply after 9 weeks and 12 weeks, at this time lactation can only meet the nutritional needs of the lamb 5%-10%, and at this time the feed consumption of ewes to form milk increased greatly; Second, from the lamb's digestive function, 7-week-old lambs have been able to use grass as efficiently as adult sheep. Therefore, Australia, New Zealand and other countries mostly promote weaning at 6-10 weeks of age and grazing on artificial grassland. China's Xinjiang Academy of Animal Science and Animal Husbandry adopted a new method of fattening a 7.5-week-old weaning lamb, with an average daily weight gain of 280 grams, a feed-to-weight ratio of 3:1, and good results.

The reason why lambs are weaned after 40 days after birth is because there is a significant correlation between the lamb's stomach volume and its live weight. Therefore, when determining the weaning time, we must also consider the lamb's weight. After weaning, the underweight lambs were significantly hindered from growth and development. In countries such as Britain and France, weaning is usually carried out when the live weight of the lamb is increased to two and a half times the birth weight or when the lamb reaches 11 to 12 kg. Experts in China have suggested that the weight of semi-fine wool modified lambs should be more than 15 kilograms, and that of mothers and lambs should be more than 12 kilograms, and that when goats weigh more than 9 kilograms, weaning is more appropriate.
