Immune and anti-epidemic procedures for Tibetan mastiff puppies and Tibetan mastiff puppies

Proper epidemic prevention for Tibetan Mastiffs mainly involves a series of vaccination schedules. Therefore, it is crucial to follow a structured and timely vaccination plan to ensure the health and immunity of these dogs.

First, Vaccination of Puppies

Puppies should receive their first vaccine at 50 days old, followed by four more doses. The second dose is given 14–21 days after the first, and then another 14–21 days later. Before administration, each vaccine should be diluted with 2 mL of sterile water, shaken well until fully dissolved, and injected either intramuscularly or subcutaneously. Each dose is administered once per injection.

Second, Vaccination of Adult Dogs

Adult Tibetan Mastiffs should be vaccinated twice a year, ideally in spring and autumn. These seasons are particularly high-risk due to the prevalence of highly contagious diseases such as canine distemper, parvovirus, parainfluenza, and hepatitis. These illnesses tend to peak during winter and early spring, making timely vaccination essential.

Spring is a critical time when temperatures rise and viruses become more active, increasing the risk of disease in dogs. Therefore, it's important to vaccinate before the threat of winter-related illnesses becomes severe. In late autumn and early winter, Tibetan Mastiffs enter their mating season, which can weaken their immune systems. Female dogs may also be in estrus, making them unsuitable for vaccination. Hence, adult dogs should be vaccinated in early winter, when there is no mating activity, and again in the fall to maintain full protection.

Third, Deworming

Puppies should be dewormed one month after birth, and then vaccinated 15 days later. As they grow, regular deworming is necessary. Adult dogs should be dewormed every three months to prevent parasites from depleting their nutrients, leading to weakness and susceptibility to other illnesses. Neglecting this can result in weight loss, poor growth, and even death. Additionally, newly imported adult dogs from Tibet often have parasitic infections, with up to 70% affected. It is vital to deworm them immediately upon arrival to ensure their health and proper development.

Fourth, Immune Serum

Immune serum helps boost the dog’s natural defenses against diseases and infections. It can be used both when a dog is sick and as a preventive measure when healthy. However, it should never be administered at the same time as a vaccine. If a dog is ill, vaccines should be postponed, as administering them while sick can worsen the condition and lead to secondary infections. Only healthy dogs should receive vaccines to ensure their effectiveness and safety.
