Kids, Uncensored

So, here's the thing—I'm one of those people who gets to travel for work, and let me tell you, it’s not half bad. My family follows me around like ducklings to a mother duck, and trust me, I couldn’t ask for better companions. Not only do my kids get to see new places, but they’re also learning the art of travel etiquette faster than I ever did. And honestly, their observations? Priceless. Recently, we were in Chicago, where my daughter Aliyah decided she needed her own Chai tea because she figured I’d be busy doing grown-up stuff. We obliged, and while we strolled down the street, Aliyah—decked out in her galoshes, holding her precious Starbucks cup, and sporting a trapper hat—looked up at me and said, “Oh, I just love New York.” Confused, I corrected her gently, “We’re in Chicago.” To which she replied with the calmest of nods, as if she'd known all along. Later that evening, I was getting ready in the bathroom when I overheard Aliyah telling someone she wasn’t hungry. “No thanks,” she said, “I just ate a blueberry.” I nearly lost it right there. It’s moments like that where you realize how fast kids pick up on things—and sometimes, they just make stuff up. A buddy of mine, Martin, had given Aliyah some treats during our trip. When I asked her if she remembered him, she waved her hand dismissively and deadpanned, “Oh mom, I’ve known him for hundreds of years.” I laughed so hard I almost dropped the snacks I was putting away. Then there was the cab ride to the Shedd Aquarium. It was raining, and the streets were packed. My friend was pointing out a bright yellow building amidst the gray backdrop, trying to explain its uniqueness. Aliyah chimed in, “Yeah, that’s a Mexican restaurant. I’ve been there, it’s good.” My friend looked at her like she had superpowers. “How do you know that?” she asked. Aliyah continued matter-of-factly, “And just up around this corner is a Starbucks.” By the end of the ride, Aliyah had completely charmed the driver—and now every time we visit a new city, she insists we take a cab. My son, on the other hand, thinks everything Aliyah says is hilarious. He laughs so much I swear he might need therapy someday. But hey, at least they entertain each other. Traveling with them is pure joy. Watching them soak up new experiences, make observations, and just generally be themselves fills me with such gratitude. Plus, their antics give me endless material for stories. Oh, and PS—I still can’t believe how well my son walks now. It’s like watching a toddler version of Fred Astaire. Tell me, what kind of funny things have your kids said lately?
