It feels like things have been moving at a slower pace lately—especially when it comes to staying active. Don’t get me wrong, there have been plenty of other areas where life has been bustling, but fitness? Not so much. Normally, I aim for working out four to five times a week, and during those periods when B is away on deployment, I often push myself even harder. It’s not just about staying fit; it’s also about giving myself a little extra breathing room as a mom. The Y is such a lifesaver for me because it doesn’t make me feel guilty about taking time for myself. But over the past six weeks or so, I’ve really slacked off. Instead of my usual routine, I’ve been managing only two or three workouts per week, and they’ve been less intense than usual. To be honest, running has never been my thing. Like, ever. If there were an Olympic event for disliking running, I’d probably take home the gold. But about six months ago, B proposed we tackle an adventure race together. And let me tell you, he must have employed some kind of Jedi mind trick to get me onboard because I somehow said yes. Mind you, it was only a 3.6-mile race—not an 8- or 12-mile marathon. I’m forever grateful for that. Since then, I’ve actually grown accustomed to running a couple of times a week. It’s not something I’d say I enjoy yet, but I can at least tolerate it without wanting to scream into a pillow. Now that things have slowed down a bit, I find myself itching to get back into it. I won’t lie—I still need a boost of motivation every time I lace up my sneakers. But I’ll admit, I no longer dread it. And that’s progress, right? I’m excited to get back into my groove and maybe even start incorporating some runs with the stroller. It’s a win-win: I stay active, and my little one gets to explore the outdoors.
