Pruning of Honggangshan Peach>
Honggangshan Peach is a high-quality variant of the Gangshanbai variety. In 1995, our company's nursery introduced 100 strains and planted them in the experimental park of Dafanzhuang Village, Dongwan Township, Gu'an County, Langfang City. The fruit of Honggangshan Peach is round and straight, with a distinct reddish halo on its surface. The average diameter is 7.8 cm, with a longitudinal length of 8.0 cm and a lateral width of 8.5 cm. The flesh has a pinkish hue, a rubbery texture, and is firm yet crisp, offering strong sweetness. It can be stored for over seven days under normal temperature conditions. The fruit development period lasts about 110 days, with an average weight of 300 grams and the largest reaching over 700 grams. In the Beijing area, it matures in early August, and importantly, there is no occurrence of fruit cracking. After more than ten years of observation, research, and practice, we have developed a comprehensive set of cultivation and management techniques for Honggangshan Peach. Here, we share the methods of plastic pruning to assist farmers in improving their growing outcomes.
The ideal trunk height for Honggangshan Peach trees is between 55 to 70 centimeters. The tree shape typically follows a three-main-branch system or a "Y" shape. The planting distance should be 3 meters between rows and 4 meters between plants, allowing for approximately 55 trees per acre. During the first year after planting, it’s not necessary to prune excessively; instead, let the trees grow freely to develop a strong root system and increase overall growth. When performing winter pruning, moderate thinning is needed to help shape the tree properly. During the second year, summer pruning involves selective thinning to promote better tree structure and improve air circulation and light penetration. Light shearing remains the primary method, especially during winter, to encourage the tree to enter the fruiting stage sooner. Generally, long fruiting branches should be cut back by 20–30 cm, medium branches by 15–20 cm, and short fruiting branches by 10–15 cm. Extension branches should be pruned more heavily, up to 30 cm, while stronger ones can go up to 50 cm. We must make full use of weak and short fruiting branches. During the growing season, we combine tree growth observations with techniques like branch pulling, topping, and tip twisting to manually regulate the tree, which helps in flower bud differentiation and increases yield. Summer pruning focuses on the main branches and fruiting branches at all levels, removing or controlling unnecessary shoots to achieve earlier fruiting and higher productivity.
