Based on my personal experience in raising cows and sheep, as well as discussions with several local livestock experts, I would like to share some practical methods for protecting animals from insect attacks. These techniques are simple, cost-effective, and have proven to be quite successful in reducing pest problems.
1. **Straw Fumigation Method**: During the summer, there is usually an abundance of dry wheat straw. Before bringing the animals into their pens in the evening, it's a good idea to fumigate the area. The best time to do this is about 30 minutes before they return. Light the dry straw, and once the fire is strong, gradually cover it with more straw to create smoke. This smoke helps to disinfect the area and spreads ash evenly throughout the pen, which has a dual benefit of repelling insects and keeping the environment cleaner.
2. **Drying Manure Method**: Utilize the strong sunlight in summer by spreading the manure from the previous night under direct sunlight. After about 30 minutes of drying, light a small fire and gradually add the dried manure to the flames. The strong odor produced will help to drive away both flying and ground insects. It's important to use cow dung for cows and sheep dung for sheep to ensure effectiveness.
3. **Drug Incense Method**: When using insect-repelling drugs, choose low-toxicity and high-efficiency options. Granular drugs are ideal, but liquid ones can also be diluted at a ratio of 1:3 (drug to water). Once the fire is burning well, spread the mixture evenly over the wood and let it burn. Many local farmers prefer this method, and it works best when applied about an hour before the animals return to their pens.
After using these methods, the pens develop a distinct smell that the animals get used to. This scent remains on their bodies, creating a natural barrier against mosquitoes and flies. Overall, these techniques not only improve animal comfort but also contribute to better health and productivity in the herd.
