Scarlet Oxalis, also known as *Oxalis safflower*, is a perennial herb belonging to the genus *Oxalis*. This plant typically grows between 15 to 25 cm in height, with a spherical stem and strong vegetative reproduction capabilities. The leaves are long-stalked, trifoliate, and arranged in a palmate pattern, with an inverted heart-shaped structure and a small depression at the tip. The flower stems range from 10 to 15 cm in length, emerging from the base and forming umbels with 12 to 14 flowers. Each flower has five pink to dark pink petals, featuring longitudinal slits. The blooming period starts in early April and continues until mid-November, with peak flowering occurring in July.
**Biological Characteristics**
1. **Effect of Temperature on Growth**
Native to South America and Brazil, Scarlet Oxalis prefers shaded and moist environments and is not cold-tolerant. Over the past six years of cultivation, no freezing damage to the bulbs has been observed. In winter, some stems may become soft, and a few leaves turn yellow, but the plant remains mostly green. The growth peaks during April to May and again from late August to late October, while it grows slowly during the hot summer months.
2. **Effect of Light on Growth**
As a heliophilic plant, *Oxalis sinensis* thrives under full sunlight but can also grow in shaded conditions. However, it develops more vigorously under direct light, producing a dense, full plant with abundant and colorful flowers.
3. **Effect of Water on Growth**
Scarlet Oxalis prefers a humid environment. It grows poorly in dry conditions but can tolerate short-term waterlogging.
**Rapid Propagation Test**
In our city, the plant does not form tubers. Bulb propagation and stem cutting are the main methods used for reproduction. The conjoined stems of *Oxalis sinensis* can be divided into three types: mother bulb, bud bulb, and leaf bulb. These bulbs have the ability to divide directly, with diameters ranging from 2 to 2.5 cm, featuring residual leaf marks and latent buds that can develop into new bulbs. Bud bulbs are young bulbs that grow on the mother bulb, with a diameter of about 0.5 to 0.8 cm. Leaf bulbs are leafy, bulbed structures that grow from the shoot and can flower, with a diameter of 1.2 to 1.5 cm. Once mature, they become the parent bulb. Experiments show that single bulbs have a high propagation coefficient, averaging 15 to 17 new bulbs per original one. The survival rate of bare bulbs and those planted in soil is similar, but bulb propagation yields the highest results.
The survival rate of *S. oxyphylla* grown in different periods was not significantly different, though bulb size and type varied. Generally, propagation is best done in spring and autumn. To increase the propagation coefficient, bulbs can be cut into 2 to 6 sections depending on their size. Two-year-old bulbs can produce 20 to 30 new plants, with a high survival rate and rapid growth. Flowers can appear within about a month.
**Cultivation and Management**
While *Oxalis* can grow in ordinary soils, it thrives best in fertile, loose, and well-drained sandy soils. During hot seasons, its growth slows down, and it becomes dormant. Applying organic fertilizer once a month during the growing season and watering regularly helps maintain its health. It is vulnerable to spider mites, which can cause yellowing, drying, and reduced flowering if left unchecked. To manage this, you can spray 40% omethoate diluted 1000–1500 times, 0.2–0.3 degrees lime sulfur, or use acaricides.
**Ornamental Features and Applications**
Scarlet Oxalis offers many advantages, such as low growth, orderly appearance, multi-leafed flowers, a long blooming period, colorful blossoms, and fast ground coverage that helps suppress weeds. It is ideal for flower beds, garden paths, open forest areas, and woodland edges. Large-scale planting or grouping patterns create a striking visual effect. Additionally, it can be potted to decorate public squares, indoor balconies, and serve as excellent Material for garden trimming.
