Artificial Cultivation of Cordyceps to Realize Industrialization

Xinhua News Channel: A recent seminar organized jointly by the Shanghai Association of Traditional Chinese Medicine Industry and the Shanghai Academy of Agricultural Sciences revealed that after 17 years of dedicated research, scientists have successfully achieved large-scale artificial cultivation of Cordyceps militaris at a cost significantly lower than the current market price of Cordyceps sinensis. This breakthrough marks a major step forward in the industrialization of TCM-based agricultural science and technology. The project has recently been awarded the third prize in the "Shanghai Science and Technology Award." Professor Wu Wei, head of the research team at the Shanghai Academy of Agricultural Sciences, explained that the team utilized advanced genetic breeding techniques to develop stable, high-quality, and high-yield strains of Cordyceps militaris. They became the first in China to surpass the annual tonnage threshold for this species. The academy's pilot base for Cordyceps sinensis now produces three tons of "grass" per year. According to comparative studies, Cordyceps militaris contains seven times more cordycepin than naturally occurring Cordyceps sinensis. It also has higher levels of cordycepic acid, polysaccharides, and SOD enzymes. These compounds are known for their anti-cancer properties, lung-supporting effects, and immune-boosting capabilities. The medicinal efficacy of Cordyceps militaris is considered comparable to that of its natural counterpart, making it a promising alternative for both medical and commercial use. This development not only offers a sustainable solution to the growing demand for Cordyceps but also reduces reliance on wild harvesting, which helps protect natural ecosystems. With the ability to produce high-quality Cordyceps at a fraction of the cost, this innovation could revolutionize the traditional medicine industry and bring affordable health benefits to a wider population.
