Artificial Cultivation of Cordyceps to Realize Industrialization
Xinhua News Channel: A recent seminar organized jointly by the Shanghai Association of Traditional Chinese Medicine Industry and the Shanghai Academy of Agricultural Sciences revealed that after 17 years of dedicated research, scientists have successfully developed a large-scale artificial cultivation method for Cordyceps militaris, a species with medicinal properties and chemical composition similar to the more expensive Cordyceps sinensis. This breakthrough allows the product to be produced at a fraction of the current market price. The project has been recognized as a key agricultural science and technology transformation initiative by the Ministry of Science and Technology and recently received the third prize in the "Shanghai Science and Technology Award."
Professor Wu Wei, head of the research team at the Shanghai Academy of Agricultural Sciences, explained that the team utilized advanced genetic breeding techniques to develop stable, high-quality, and high-yield strains of Cordyceps militaris. They were the first in China to break through the annual tonnage barrier for this species. Currently, the pilot base established by the academy can produce 3 tons of Cordyceps militaris annually.
According to comparative studies, Cordyceps militaris contains seven times more cordycepin than natural Cordyceps sinensis. It also has higher levels of cordycepic acid, polysaccharides, and SOD enzymes, making it equally effective for immune support, respiratory health, and cancer prevention. These findings suggest that the artificial version is not only cost-effective but also potentially more potent in certain medicinal aspects. As a result, this innovation could significantly impact the traditional medicine industry and provide a sustainable alternative to the rare and expensive natural Cordyceps sinensis.
