Pigeons are small and highly sensitive to their environment. If not properly cared for, they can easily fall ill or die, which negatively affects the survival rate. To ensure successful rearing of meat pigeons, it's essential to follow these key principles.
First, housing is crucial. Choose a clean site free from bacteria and pollution, located on higher ground with good drainage and away from urban areas. The loft should be made of brick or wood, well-ventilated, and kept dry and clean. Good lighting and air circulation are also important for the health of the birds.
Second, environmental control is necessary. In winter, keep the loft warm but avoid strong ammonia smells by using vinegar in stoves or opening windows for ventilation. During rainy seasons, maintain dryness and proper ventilation, especially under nest boxes. In summer, prevent heat stress by ensuring good airflow. Regular disinfection using lime or commercial disinfectants is also important.
Third, feed quality matters. Provide high-quality pellets, supplemented with mung beans and shell wheat while reducing shelled grains. Soak and dry all feed before feeding, and offer smaller, more frequent meals. Young pigeons benefit from a mix of corn, wheat, and sorghum, while breeding pigeons need extra protein.
Fourth, water is essential. Ensure a constant supply of clean, fresh water. Water intake varies depending on temperature and housing type—caged pigeons drink more than those in flat systems. Keep drinking fountains clean and free from contamination.
Fifth, health supplements should be given. For 7–30-day-old pigeons, provide two special health sands and one dose of cod liver oil daily. Mix coarse sand, bone meal, and shell powder in advance, and add other ingredients carefully to avoid oxidation or moisture absorption.
Sixth, increase lighting. Use energy-saving lamps (6–10 watts) at night to extend feeding time and promote growth. This helps hens feed more effectively and supports faster development.
Seventh, adjust bedding according to the season. Add or remove nesting material based on temperature to prevent cold exposure, especially on the abdomen.
Eighth, regular bathing helps maintain hygiene and stimulates growth. Internet-raised young pigeons should be bathed every 15 days, while caged ones can be sprayed with water every 20 days to prevent parasites.
Ninth, swap young pigeons regularly. Change their positions every 2–3 days to ensure even growth. If a pigeon dies, the remaining one should be given half a yeast tablet to avoid overfeeding.
Tenth, disease prevention is critical. All new pigeons must be quarantined and observed before being introduced to the flock. Avoid mixing with other animals, maintain cleanliness, and disinfect regularly. Every five days, provide disinfectant water. At 8 days old, give yeast tablets and health sand to prevent digestive issues. For flu, administer half a cold tablet and 1/6 chlortetracycline three times daily. For eye infections, use chloramphenicol or chlortetracycline eye drops twice daily.
By following these ten key steps, you can significantly improve the health, growth, and survival of your meat pigeons.
