Vegetable pests have specific behavioral patterns that can be exploited for effective control. By using sex pheromones, light, colored boards, poplar branches, and sweet-sour liquids to trap adult insects, it is possible to reduce their population by preventing mating and reproduction.
### The Habits of Vegetable Pests
1. **Color Preference**:
Many pests are attracted to certain colors. For example, male beet armyworms and Spodoptera litura are drawn to the pheromones released by females. Additionally, some pests show a strong preference for yellow, such as whiteflies, aphids, and Liriomyza sativae, while others like the palm bug are attracted to blue.
2. **Light Attraction**:
Some pests, including the cotton bollworm, diamondback moth, and cutworms, are strongly phototactic. They are drawn to lights at night and often gather around them. The cotton bollworm also has a tendency to hide in poplar branches during the day.
3. **Feeding Preferences**:
- **Sweet substances**: Insects like tobacco caterpillars are attracted to molasses.
- **Sweet and sour liquids**: Spodoptera litura and fruit flies are drawn to these mixtures.
- **Organic matter**: Some pests, such as the cabbage worm, feed on fermented vegetables, manure, or other organic materials.
- **Leaves**: Pests like aphids and mites prefer high-nitrogen leaves, such as those found on cabbages.
### The "Five Lure" Technology for Pest Control
1. **Sex Pheromone Trapping**:
This method uses synthetic chemicals that mimic the natural pheromones of pests to attract and trap male insects. It effectively reduces mating and prevents reproduction. Common products include sex attractants, which are highly effective against pests like Plutella xylostella and Spodoptera litura.
2. **Color Board Trapping**:
Yellow boards are commonly used to trap pests like whiteflies, aphids, and Liriomyza sativae. It's recommended to place about 10 yellow boards per acre and apply oil every 7–10 days to maintain effectiveness. Orange boards can be used for orange-colored pests, while blue boards help trap palm flies.
3. **Light Trapping**:
Installing 50 insecticidal lamps per acre can significantly reduce the population of pests such as the diamondback moth, cotton bollworm, and beet armyworm during peak seasons.
4. **Sweet-Sour Liquid Trapping**:
A mixture of sweet and sour liquid can be placed in each acre of vegetable fields to attract and trap pests like the melon fruit fly.
5. **Poplar Branch Trapping**:
In areas where poplars are available, placing 10 poplar branches per mu (approximately 667 square meters) in vegetable fields helps trap pests like the cotton bollworm.
By understanding the behavior of pests and applying these five trapping methods, farmers can effectively manage pest populations in an eco-friendly and sustainable way.
