Sweet potato is used as feed

After sweet potatoes are harvested and used as animal feed, the leftover scorpions—small pieces of the root that remain in the field—are often discarded or burned during spring. This traditional method is not only wasteful but also harmful to the environment. Fortunately, a new innovative product has emerged that allows for the full utilization of these leftover sweet potato scraps, transforming them into high-nutrient, premium animal feed. This not only reduces waste but also brings significant economic benefits to farmers. The fermented feed has a unique flavor profile—it's slightly sour, sweet, soft, ripe, aromatic, and even hints of a mild wine-like taste. These characteristics greatly improve its palatability, making it highly appealing to pigs, cows, sheep, poultry, and even fish. As a result, animals eat more, grow faster, and farmers can increase their income by up to 20%. The process is simple yet effective. First, wash the sweet potatoes thoroughly to remove any dirt or impurities. Then, chop them into small pieces or crush them into a slurry. Add an appropriate amount of feed starter culture, mix well, and pack the mixture tightly into a container. The tighter the packing, the better the fermentation results. Cover the container with plastic film to create an airtight seal. During the initial stages of fermentation, it’s important to allow some airflow by either loosening the cover or briefly opening the plastic film. This helps microorganisms multiply more quickly. Once the temperature rises to around 45°C, seal the container again and stop heating to initiate anaerobic fermentation. The entire process usually takes about one day, after which the feed is ready to use. By adopting this method, farmers can turn what was once considered waste into a valuable resource, promoting sustainability and improving productivity at the same time.
