It is not possible to feed fishmeal hens
In order to maintain a strong and productive layer, it's essential to focus on both breed quality and feeding strategies. However, the most critical factor is the nutritional quality of the feed. Laying hens require balanced rations that meet their energy and protein needs. While vegetable-based proteins like soybean meal are commonly used, they may not be sufficient on their own. This is because the protein requirements of chickens are primarily about amino acids, not just protein in general.
Animal protein sources, such as fishmeal, are often added to supplement the diet. Fishmeal is particularly rich in methionine, an essential amino acid that is lacking in soybean meal. By including both soybean meal and fishmeal, egg production can be significantly improved, with hens laying around 250 to 260 eggs per year. However, fishmeal is expensive—especially imported varieties that contain a high percentage of bones. This increases feed costs and reduces profitability, which is not ideal for commercial poultry operations.
As a result, many large-scale farms in Europe and North America have shifted toward fishmeal-free diets. These diets are designed to compensate for the deficiencies in plant-based proteins by adding synthetic amino acids, such as methionine, along with vitamins B12 and A. Typically, these additives make up 18% to 20% of the diet, ensuring that the hens receive all necessary nutrients. With this approach, egg production remains high—around 245 to 250 eggs per year—only slightly lower than with fishmeal. The cost savings are significant, making this method more economically viable.
Additionally, alternatives like betaine can replace part or all of the synthetic methionine in the diet. Studies show that using betaine instead of methionine does not negatively affect egg production, weight, or fertility. In fact, it may even improve feed conversion efficiency during the late laying period. These findings confirm that replacing animal protein with alternative ingredients is not only feasible but also beneficial for both productivity and economic returns. Therefore, the idea that animal proteins cannot be replaced is no longer valid in modern poultry nutrition.
