Jerusalem artichoke is expected to become a biofuel>
Jerusalem artichoke is set to become a key player in the future of second-generation liquid biofuels! At the recent Hubei Automotive Industry Development Forum, Professor Hu Yong from Wuhan University of Technology's School of Automotive Technology shared this exciting development with attendees. The plant, known scientifically as *Helianthus tuberosus*, is not only a nutritious and tasty vegetable when pickled but also holds great potential in the energy sector.
The tuber contains high levels of fructose, which can be converted into a compound called 2,5-dimethylfuran (DMF), a promising second-generation biofuel. Professor Hu and his team have developed an efficient industrial production process for DMF, bringing it one step closer to commercial use.
Research shows that DMF has a higher energy content than ethanol—about 40% more—and performs similarly to conventional gasoline. Unlike ethanol, DMF is water-insoluble, meaning it doesn't absorb moisture, making it easier to store and transport. In the 1980s, U.S. research institutions already demonstrated its excellent fuel properties, proving its viability as an alternative to fossil fuels.
From an economic perspective, producing 1 ton of DMF requires approximately 10 to 14 tons of Jerusalem artichoke. The raw material cost is estimated to be under 3,000 yuan, and with additional costs for transportation, labor, and energy, the total production cost comes to around 4,600 yuan—roughly 1,000 yuan less than petroleum-based fuels. This makes DMF a competitive and sustainable option.
What’s more, Jerusalem artichoke thrives in non-arable lands such as deserts, mudflats, and saline-alkali soils, making it an ideal crop for regions where traditional agriculture is not feasible. With its wide availability in China and low environmental impact, it could play a major role in the country's renewable energy strategy.
As global demand for clean and affordable energy grows, the potential of Jerusalem artichoke as a biofuel source is becoming increasingly clear. With continued research and investment, DMF may soon become a major player in the energy market.
