Scientific and effective methods for breeding dairy cows>
In August 2000, Zhang Shuxian retired from a major oil refinery in Quzhou and returned to his hometown—Female Guozhuang Village in the Fengrun District of Tangshan City, Hebei Province. With a passion for agriculture and a vision for a better future, he invested over 100,000 yuan to build a small dairy farm on two mu of land. At the beginning, he imported eight milk cows from other regions, but due to a lack of experience in selecting quality cattle, he ended up buying inferior ones at high prices. This mistake cost him nearly 60,000 yuan. Faced with this setback, Lao Zhang didn’t give up. Instead, he sought advice from colleagues and local veterinarians, learned from experienced technicians, and gradually improved his skills through hands-on practice.
Over the years, he became an expert in dairy farming, mastering everything from feeding to disease prevention. To ensure a safe and healthy environment for his cows, he actively worked with animal health officials to prevent diseases like foot-and-mouth, brucellosis, and tuberculosis. He developed a scientific vaccination schedule based on the cows' feeding cycles. As a result, there have been no major outbreaks on his farm in recent years. He also implemented a strict hygiene system: the barns were disinfected weekly, cow dung was removed daily, and soft loess was spread on the walking areas to reduce the risk of hoof diseases such as laminitis and foot rot.
Understanding that dairy cows are herbivores, Zhang made full use of the idle land around his farm, planting nearly three acres of high-quality forage grasses like alfalfa and pineleaf. This not only solved the problem of feed supply but also boosted milk production by two percentage points. The annual average yield now exceeds six tons per cow, and the quality of the fresh milk has greatly improved, earning praise from milk buyers.
Although Zhang’s farm is much smaller than large-scale dairy operations, it is well-organized and profitable. Currently, there are 11 dairy cows on the farm, generating an annual income of about 30,000 yuan. In 2005 and 2006, his family was recognized as a national model household for dairy farming technology for two consecutive years. Looking ahead, Lao Zhang plans to encourage nearby farmers to grow grass and sign purchase contracts, which will not only improve feed quality but also help raise the income of surrounding farmers. His story is a testament to perseverance, learning, and community development.
