In some cases, agricultural vehicle operators fail to properly maintain batteries after the vehicles are decommissioned, such as with combine harvesters and four-wheel tractors. This neglect often leads to battery freezing, making them hard to repair or recycle. To prevent this from happening, especially during winter, it's essential to implement proper battery storage practices.
When storing batteries in a greenhouse or other sheltered area, they should be kept in a space where the temperature stays above 0°C. Avoid placing them directly on the floor, as cold surfaces can accelerate deterioration. Before storage, clean the battery casing thoroughly, top up the electrolyte to the correct level, and fully charge the battery. Every two months, perform a supplementary charge to keep the battery in good condition. Additionally, check the electrolyte level every two weeks, and if it’s low, add distilled water immediately to avoid damage.
Adjusting the electrolyte concentration is another effective strategy. The electrolyte is made of water and sulfuric acid, and increasing the sulfuric acid content raises its specific gravity, which lowers the freezing point. Based on the local winter temperatures, choose an appropriate electrolyte density to prevent freezing.
During winter, it's important to keep the battery charged. If the battery is discharged by more than 50%, the electrolyte becomes vulnerable to freezing. Therefore, always ensure the battery remains at least half-charged. Regularly monitor the battery’s charge level and recharge it promptly if needed.
Temperature also plays a key role in battery performance. As the ambient temperature drops by 1°C, the battery capacity decreases by about 1-2%. To counteract this, store the battery indoors or move it to a warm location above 0°C when not in use. This helps maintain its efficiency and extends its lifespan.
Proper mixing of the electrolyte and distilled water is crucial. If you need to add water, do so while charging the battery. This ensures the mixture is well-blended and reduces the risk of freezing. Never leave un-mixed water sitting on top of the electrolyte, as it can freeze and cause internal damage.
Finally, regular inspection and proper starting procedures are essential. Check the battery and charging system frequently. Adjust the voltage regulator to increase the charging voltage to around 0.60V. When starting the engine, limit each attempt to no more than 3–5 seconds, and wait at least one minute between attempts. Continuous starting can harm both the starter motor and the battery, so always follow these guidelines to protect your equipment.
