When cucumber plants have developed 2-3 true leaves, the flower buds on leaf nodes 2-11 begin to differentiate, but their sex is still undetermined. This is the optimal time for applying cucumber saponin, as the treatment is most effective during this stage. Once the plant has more than four true leaves, the sex of the flower buds is already determined, and applying the saponin at this point will no longer be effective. Therefore, the best time to spray in summer and autumn is when the plants are at the 2-3 true-leaf stage. It is recommended to apply the treatment 1-3 times, with an interval of 7-10 days between each application.
Regarding the concentration, a dilution of 0.01%-0.02% with ethephon is typically used. The exact concentration should be adjusted based on the number of applications. A common practice is to use 0.02% concentration for two sprays or 0.01% for three sprays. This ensures that the plant receives the right amount of hormone without over-application.
The spraying method should be done on a sunny day, preferably after 4 p.m., to avoid excessive evaporation. The solution should be evenly sprayed onto all leaves and growing points, ensuring fine droplets for better absorption. It's also important to leave about 10% of the plants untreated, as they will produce male flowers that provide necessary pollen for the female flowers in the field.
In terms of fertilizer and water management, after applying the saponin at the seedling stage, the number of female flowers increases, and internodes become shorter. Within the first 20 nodes, multiple female flowers may develop. However, for proper fruit set and growth, it’s essential to maintain good nutrient and water supply throughout the growing period. In the later stages of growth, it's advisable to spray 3-5 times with a solution of 0.3% potassium dihydrogen phosphate mixed with 3000-4000 times diluted 802 mixture. This helps support both vegetative and reproductive growth, while also preventing early aging of the plant.
