How to store potato seeds in winter

Potato tubers are considered cold-resistant vegetables, and the ideal storage temperature is between 0°C and 4°C. Traditionally, deep-well kilns have been used for storage, but the temperature and humidity inside these structures can fluctuate significantly. This instability often leads to premature sprouting of the seed potatoes, which results in a loss of nutrients from the mother tuber and weak germination. On the other hand, using the trench method poses its own challenges. The ambient temperature can be unpredictable, and if the storage trench is too deep, it may lead to heat damage, causing the potatoes to sprout or rot. Additionally, they are more susceptible to freezing, which can greatly reduce their viability as seeds. Therefore, utilizing an empty house for winter storage is considered an effective and practical method. The process begins by sorting the potato seeds, removing any diseased or damaged tubers, and placing the healthy ones into nylon bags—each bag containing 20 to 30 pounds. These bags are then stacked in the empty house, with a height of 1.5 to 2.0 meters. It's important to keep the stacks away from the walls, maintaining a distance of at least 30 cm to avoid exposure to low temperatures. To help regulate the internal temperature, small pots or bowls filled with water are placed in the center of the room. As winter progresses and the temperature drops, when frost begins to form on the surface of the water, it’s time to cover the stacks with blankets. A thermometer should be hung in the room to monitor the temperature, and the thickness of the blankets can be adjusted accordingly. During the coldest periods, curtains should be drawn over doors and windows to prevent cold air from entering. This method requires minimal investment, is easy to manage, and helps maintain stable conditions that reduce seed loss. It is particularly well-suited for small-scale farmers who need an efficient and cost-effective way to store their potato seeds through the winter months.
