Scientific and effective methods for breeding dairy cows
In August 2000, Zhang Shuxian retired from a major oil refinery in Quzhou and returned to his hometown—Female Guozhuang Village in the Fengrun District of Tangshan City, Hebei Province. With a passion for agriculture and a vision for a new life, he invested over 100,000 yuan to build a small dairy farm covering two mu of land. At the start, he imported eight milk cows from other regions, but due to his lack of experience in selecting quality cattle, he ended up buying inferior ones at high prices. This mistake cost him nearly 60,000 yuan. Instead of giving up, Lao Zhang remained determined. He sought advice from colleagues and local veterinarians, and with the help of experienced technicians, he restructured his herd and learned proper farming techniques through hands-on practice.
Over the years, he gradually became an expert in dairy farming. To ensure a safe and healthy environment for his cows, he actively cooperated with animal health officials, participating in foot-and-mouth disease prevention and testing for brucellosis and tuberculosis. He also developed a scientific vaccination plan based on the feeding cycle of his dairy cows. As a result, there have been no major outbreaks in recent years. He maintained strict hygiene standards, disinfecting the cowshed weekly, cleaning manure daily, and spreading soft loess on the grazing area to prevent hoof diseases like laminitis and foot rot.
Recognizing that dairy cows are herbivores, Zhang made full use of idle land around his farm, planting nearly three acres of high-quality forage such as alfalfa and pineleaf. This not only provided a steady supply of nutritious feed but also increased milk production by two percentage points. The average annual yield per cow now exceeds six tons, and the quality of the fresh milk has improved significantly, earning the trust of milk buyers.
Although Zhang's farm is small compared to large-scale dairy operations, it is well-organized and profitable. Currently, he has 11 dairy cows, which generate about 30,000 yuan in annual income. In 2005 and 2006, his farm was recognized as a national model for dairy technology households. Looking ahead, Lao Zhang plans to encourage surrounding farmers to grow grass and sign purchase agreements. This will not only improve the quality of feed but also help increase the income of local farmers. His story is a testament to perseverance, learning, and community development.
