Sweet potato remembers

A few days ago, a reporter learned from the Quanzhou City Bureau of Agriculture that many farmers are still in the habit of turning sweet potato leaves. They believe that this practice helps control the growth of stems and leaves while promoting nutrient distribution to the roots. However, experts have clarified that this is actually counterproductive. In reality, the natural arrangement of sweet potato leaves in the field is well-optimized. The petioles of the leaves rotate to ensure that each leaf receives the best possible sunlight exposure. When farmers manually turn the leaves, it disrupts this natural balance. The leaves may flip and overlap, taking 1–2 days to re-adjust to their optimal position. This delay reduces the time available for photosynthesis, significantly lowering its efficiency. As a result, less sugar is produced, and the leaves start to respire more, consuming some of the organic matter they produce. This not only hinders the growth of the tubers but also affects overall yield. Moreover, turning the leaves can damage the vines and reduce the total leaf area. This further limits the plant's ability to absorb nutrients and water. In addition, the process often cuts off adventitious roots, which play a crucial role in nutrient uptake. This disruption leads to an imbalance in nutrient distribution, pushing more resources toward the stems and leaves rather than the tubers, ultimately slowing down tuber development. Studies have shown that frequent leaf turning can lead to a significant drop in yield—often around 15% or more. Therefore, it’s advisable for farmers to avoid this practice unless absolutely necessary. Experts suggest that if there has been heavy rainfall, more adventitious roots will develop on the sweet potato vines. In such cases, farmers can gently lift the stems and remove the excess roots without damaging the vine. At the same time, it’s important to remove weeds from the field and carefully return the vines to their original positions to maintain healthy growth conditions.
