A few days ago, a reporter learned from the Quanzhou City Bureau of Agriculture that many farmers still practice the traditional method of turning sweet potato vines. They believe this technique helps control the growth of stems and leaves while encouraging nutrient distribution toward the tubers. However, experts have clarified that this approach is actually counterproductive.
In reality, the natural arrangement of sweet potato leaves in the field is already optimized for light absorption. The petioles of the leaves rotate naturally to position the leaflets in the best sunlight exposure. When farmers manually turn the leaves, it causes them to flip and overlap, disrupting their natural orientation. It can take 1-2 days for the leaves to adjust back to their optimal position, which delays photosynthesis and significantly reduces its efficiency. This leads to lower production of photosynthetic products and increases the respiration rate of the leaves, consuming some of the organic matter and ultimately affecting tuber development.
Moreover, turning the vines can damage both the leaves and the stems, reducing the overall leaf area available for photosynthesis. This further hinders the growth of the tubers. In addition, the act of turning often cuts off adventitious roots, which are crucial for water and nutrient uptake. This disrupts the natural nutrient flow, causing more nutrients to be directed toward the stems and leaves instead of the tubers, thereby slowing down tuber enlargement.
Studies have shown that frequent vine turning can lead to a significant drop in yield—often by around 15% or more. Therefore, experts strongly advise against this practice.
Instead, if there has been heavy rainfall, sweet potato vines tend to develop more adventitious roots. In such cases, farmers can gently lift the stems and remove the extra roots without damaging the vines. At the same time, they should clear weeds from the field and carefully return the vines to their original positions. These practices help maintain healthy growth and maximize tuber yield.
