In the past two years, the U.S. market for medicinal products, functional foods, and ornamental species has shown great potential, and aquaculture has gained increasing popularity. However, raising alfalfa is not as straightforward or easy as it once seemed. Success in breeding requires mastering advanced farming techniques. Today, I’ll share some key insights on managing cockroach breeding:
1. **Temperature and Humidity**
Temperature and humidity are the most critical factors during cockroach breeding. Maintaining the right conditions can significantly improve survival rates. For cockroaches aged 1 to 2 weeks, the room temperature should be kept around 33°C. When they’re 3 to 5 weeks old, the temperature should be reduced to 28°C. From 6 to 7 weeks, it should be maintained at 26°C, and after 8 weeks, the ideal temperature drops to 24°C.
Humidity is equally important. Too much moisture can lead to fungal infections, while too little may cause respiratory issues. For roaches under one week old, the relative humidity should be between 60% and 70%. After that, it should be slightly lower, around 55% to 60%.
2. **Ventilation**
Proper ventilation is essential, especially when maintaining optimal temperatures. Good airflow helps increase oxygen levels and reduce carbon dioxide buildup, which supports healthy metabolism in the cockroaches.
3. **Stocking Density**
Density plays a major role in breeding success. If the density is too high, cockroaches may fight each other, leading to higher mortality. On the other hand, if it’s too low, it results in wasted space and increased costs. A general guideline is to keep about 80 per square meter when they’re around 10 days old. This number decreases as they grow: 50 per square meter from 10 to 28 days, 30 per square meter from 4 to 10 weeks, and finally 15 per square meter after 10 weeks.
By carefully managing these factors, breeders can significantly improve the health and productivity of their cockroach populations. Whether you're a seasoned breeder or just starting out, understanding and applying these principles is key to long-term success.
