These plants stood tall, reaching nearly one meter in height, with vibrant shades of yellow, gold, and orange. The flowers were densely packed along the branches, making them ideal for extracting natural lutein—a powerful antioxidant widely used in feed, food, pharmaceuticals, and industrial dyes. Liu explained that this new hybrid not only boasts higher pigment content but also offers greater yield and disease resistance compared to traditional varieties. He estimated an output of 1,500 to 1,600 strains per mu, with each plant producing over 120 flowers. At an average weight of 25 grams per flower, the yield per hectare could reach as high as 9,000 jin (about 4.5 tons), with potential to exceed 10,000 jin under optimal conditions. With his background as a former agricultural technician and later a national cadre, Liu has made a name for himself through innovative seed production techniques. He has been recognized as a regional model worker and a national science and technology model, and even holds membership in the International Holographic Society. His latest achievement involves a male-sterile line hybrid, which shows exceptional traits such as a honeycomb-like flower structure, a petal-to-torus ratio of 8:2, and a pigment content of 19–22%, significantly higher than conventional varieties. Currently, marigold granules with a pigment content of 17% are priced at around 8,500 yuan per ton, with each additional thousand points increasing the price by 500 yuan. If the pigment content reaches 20%, the value could rise to 10,000 yuan per ton. Liu is now preparing to introduce his new hybrid seeds, expecting a dramatic increase in profitability for farmers. China is one of the world’s leading producers of pigmented marigolds, with planting areas exceeding 200,000 mu—accounting for about one-third of global production. Danish flower expert Dr. Nick Lai, after visiting Liu’s company, emphasized the massive market potential for hybrid pigment marigolds, especially as demand for natural pigments grows due to restrictions on synthetic alternatives. Liu is already supplying conventional seeds to large-scale plantations, including a 15,000-mu project in Daqing. Next year, the planting area there is expected to expand to 100,000 mu, and Liu plans to provide his newly selected hybrids to meet the growing demand. “You can’t be satisfied with just one breed,” he said. “We must continue with tissue culture and provide millions of hybrid seedlings to ensure sustainable growth.”
