Gorgeous Sedum, also known as the "Long-Medicine King" or "Eight Treasures of Sedum," is a unique succulent plant valued for its medicinal properties. Its leaf juice is known for its heat-clearing and detoxifying effects, making it effective in treating venom from scorpions and wasps. Because of this, it's commonly called "Scorpion Grass" in local communities. Not only does it have practical uses, but it also offers stunning visual appeal. When in bloom, its flowers resemble fireworks, creating a breathtaking display that makes it a rare and beautiful ornamental plant.
This perennial succulent thrives in well-lit and ventilated environments. It is native to northeastern China and can be found in provinces such as Hebei, Henan, Shandong, and Anhui. The plant typically grows up to 30–50 cm tall, with a thick, upright stem and fleshy, oval-shaped leaves arranged in opposite or whorled patterns. The flowers are colorful, ranging from white and pink to red and purple, and they bloom from August to October. Its dense, tidy inflorescences make it an excellent choice for garden ground cover or decorative planting in courtyards, balconies, and windows.
For optimal growth, Gorgeous Sedum prefers well-drained, fertile sandy loam soil with plenty of sunlight. It is highly frost-resistant, capable of surviving temperatures as low as -20°C. In gardens, it can be planted either individually or in groups. Pruning before July helps maintain a compact shape and encourages more blooms. When grown in pots, a mix of 40% humus-rich soil, 40% slag, and 20% river sand, along with some decomposed poultry manure, works well. Potted plants should be placed in sunny, well-ventilated areas, and repotting is recommended each spring before new growth begins.
Gorgeous Sedum is easy to care for, requiring minimal watering and fertilizing. During the growing season, water only when the topsoil is completely dry. Overwatering should be avoided, especially during rainy seasons, to prevent root rot. After flowering in November, the above-ground parts can be cut back to encourage stronger regrowth the following year. For potted plants, simply place them in a sheltered, sunny spot during winter for safe overwintering.
Propagation is usually done through cuttings, which are taken from healthy stems in spring before flowering. Cut the stems into 10 cm sections, ensuring each has at least two nodes, and place them in plain sand. Roots will appear within 10 days. Plants propagated this way can bloom in the same year. Alternatively, underground stems can be divided in early spring or late fall and directly planted in soil. Seed propagation is also possible, though it takes longer—about a year before blooming. Collect mature seeds in autumn, clean them, and sow them in early spring. Seedlings can be transplanted once they reach 10–15 cm in height.
