Gorgeous Sedum, also known as the "King of Long-Medicine" or "Eight Treasures of Sedum," is a unique and visually striking plant that has been traditionally used for its medicinal properties. Its leaf juice is known for its heat-clearing and detoxifying effects, making it effective in treating stings from scorpions and wasps. Because of this, it's commonly called "Scorpion Grass" in local folk traditions. The plant’s beauty is truly remarkable—when it blooms, it resembles a burst of fireworks, creating a stunning visual display. It's not only a rare ornamental plant but also a popular choice for gardens, balconies, and indoor spaces due to its vibrant appearance and easy care.
Gorgeous Sedum is a perennial succulent belonging to the Sedum family. It's native to northeastern China and can be found in provinces such as Hebei, Henan, Shandong, and Anhui. The plant has a thick, upright stem that typically grows between 30 cm and 50 cm tall. The base of the stem is brown and slightly woody, while the upper part is light green with a slight white coating. The leaves are fleshy, opposite or arranged in whorls, and have an obovate shape with slightly serrated edges. Their color ranges from pale green to grayish green with a waxy sheen. The inflorescence is terminal, forming a dense cyme up to 15 cm in diameter. The flowers come in various colors, including white, red, pink, and purple, and they bloom from August to October.
This plant thrives in sunny and well-ventilated conditions and is highly resistant to cold, capable of surviving temperatures as low as -20°C. When planted in gardens, it should be placed in well-drained, fertile sandy soil with plenty of sunlight. It can be planted alone or in groups, and pruning before July helps keep the plant compact and encourages more flowering. For potted plants, a mix of 40% humus-rich soil, 40% slag, and 20% river sand, along with some decomposed poultry manure, works well. Potted plants should be placed in sunny, well-ventilated areas like windowsills or balconies to maintain their vibrant foliage. Repotting should be done annually before new growth begins.
Gorgeous Sedum is very hardy and requires minimal maintenance. Watering should follow the "wet and dry" principle—only water when the topsoil is completely dry. Overwatering can lead to root rot, especially during rainy seasons. After flowering in November, the above-ground parts can be cut back to encourage fresh growth the following year. For potted plants, winter care involves placing them in a sheltered, sunny spot to ensure survival through the colder months.
Propagation is typically done through stem cuttings, which can be taken in spring before flowering. Cuttings should be about 10 cm long and include at least two nodes. They can be rooted in plain sand within 10 days. Vegetative propagation using underground stems is also effective, especially in early spring or late fall. Mature seeds can be collected in autumn, cleaned, and sown in river sand in March or April. Seedlings can be transplanted once they reach 10–15 cm in height, though blooming usually occurs the following year.
